servative, said in a statement he supports equality for all Americans "and an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation.

"I also oppose the misuse of the initiate process by extremist groups to institutionalize discrimination," the former senator said.

In addition to some financial support, the group will help knock on doors especially in rural areas to dispel myths about civil rights for gays and lesbians, Hattaway said.

Anti-gay efforts are fueled by the argument that gays and lesbians want "special rights," he said.

"Most people don't understand civil rights laws don't cover gay people and that gay people can be fired from their jobs," he said.

In Idaho, gay rights activists have met with mixed results in attempts to educate the electorate, said Nicole LeFavour of the Idaho Campaign for Human Dignity and the "Don't Sign On" campaign in Boise.

"What we've seen in Boise, Idaho, is really

amazing... What we're seeing in rural Idaho is not as encouraging," she said.

Small groups of anti-gay organizers have stirred up support for initiatives in rural areas, she said. "But religious leaders, nurses associations and social workers are working with us in Boise.

"People are starting to see these measures mean discrimination and censorship and they are rejecting it. We've seen people standing up for their neighbors and say they won't stand for discrimination," LeFavour said.

Mandy Carter of the Black Gay and Lesbian Leadership Fund said the radical right used black ministers to help rally support for an anti-gay measure recently in Cincinnati.

But Susan Hibbard, a campaign consultant for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, said clergy have helped defend gay rights in other areas.

"In Washington state, people said, 'Hands Off Washington,' including Catholic bishops who signed statements of support," she said.
